Find your shortcut to Half-Life. Right-click on it, and open its properties menu. It's TARGET should be something like this: "C:/SIERRA/halflife/hl/exe." Change its TARGET value to match something like this: "C:/SIERRA/halflife/hl.exe -console +sv_cheats 1" (without the parenthesis, of course. Also note the spacing). Click on OK to close it and save your changes.
Now launch Half-lfie by doubleclicking the icon. You will now see a new option at the menu: console. You can load up a saved game, and start trying some of these commands:
Hit the ~ key to bring down the console during a game, which will fill half your screen with a dark gray area, pause your game, and fill it with lots of pretty yellow text that you probably don't understand. Then, type in any of the following and press ENTER. This will usually result in a response from the console, indicating whether the command failed or succeeded. Here, try some fo these:
/god
(Invincibility! Woohoo!)
/impulse 101
(ALL weapons and items, let 'er rip!)
/thirdperson
(See what your character looks like, also ups the difficulty level)
/noclip
(enables flying and you can go through walls)
/give item_(item here)
(select from the following list, type in your item, then press enter. When you press ~, you will aquire your new item.)
/map (mapname here)
(Instantly get anywhere by loading the map, doesn't work for last map)
